Prairie du Rocher School District earns Bright Star Award

Prairie du Rocher School District 134 received notice that the district has earned the SchoolSearchTM 2010 Bright Star Award for educational excellence.

District 134 is one of 81 Illinois School Districts (out of 869 school districts), honored with this award.

SchoolSearchTM awards school districts that shine in spite of low funding. All school districts in Illinois are considered for the award, and the award is based on objective factors on which all districts are judged fairly. The award criteria are based on the districts whose students' academic performance ranks in the upper one third of Illinois school districts, but who expenditure per pupil ranks in the lower one-fourth of Illinois school districts.

SchoolSearchTM is an educational research and consulting firm that publishes online rankings of school systems. It works with major companies to provide their relocating families school information. School quality is the top concern of most relocating families.

The Prairie du Rocher School received a certification. Dr. Dee Shugart, president of SchoolSearchTM, wrote Superintendent Jill Asbury and said, "Congratulations and best wishes to you and your fine school district for striving to provide your students with an outstanding educational environment."

 IAAE AWARD 2010

Wildlife artist, Laurie Becker, received the Artist Award for Visual Arts that is given annually by the Illinois Alliance for Arts Education (IAAE).  She, along with recipients in other categories, was honored at the 27th Annual Service Recognition Ceremony held at the Executive Mansion in Springfield, Illinois on March 18th.  She was nominated for this award by Jill Asbury, the Principal/Superintendent of Prairie du Rocher School.  Nominees are received from the entire state based on their involvement and support of the arts.

“I was completely humbled to be honored with others of such caliber.  To be in the company of people who have an absolute passion for the same things as me was very rewarding.  I was shocked to see the amount of respect and gratitude that the IAAE and the State’s communities give the Arts.  Even as the state struggles financially to keep its teachers, their support was amazing.  Most people view ‘the arts’ as someone who’s handy with a paint brush or can dance.  But it is so much more than that.  Especially the role it plays in young people’s lives.  The fact that children excel more academically when exposed to the arts is a proven fact.  This organization recognizes children, artists, and community leaders who support this.  I wish I could have taken all of the kids I’ve had the pleasure of working with (past and present) with me to the awards ceremony.  They are the real reason for me receiving this award.  There are always children (including my own) who show me a lot of thanks and appreciation but I don’t think they realize how much I benefit from them.  I am truly grateful for them and the opportunities I’ve been given.  So often as people grow older, feelings you get at a young age fade.  Feelings like picking up a paint brush or a crayon for the first time, being able to sing or dance anytime/anywhere, making your first mud pie, the first time you watched a Walt Disney movie – that is where creativity and an open mind begins.  It’s interesting to think about the kind of world we would live in if no one ever lost their sense of wonder.”
